Orangutan Sumatra in Bukit Lawang, Leuser National Park
Orangutans are the only great apes of Asia. They are found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. When they were first discovered, it was assumed that there was just one species in the Pongo genus, but overtime it was revealed that each island contained a unique species. Scientists classified the Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and the Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii), and things remained at just two for a while, that was until more recently!
